Dixie laughed.  Poor Bryce.  She was more of a disaster in the kitchen than Dixie.  ”Sure thing, B.  You…” She lowered her voice conspiratorially.  ”You wanna come over to my place to learn?  You know, to avoid Mother Hen?”  She grinned.

“If you are referring to the Gotham penthouse, of course. I’d rather not leave the city for something so… trivial.” She didn’t mean it as an insult and knew Dixie would understand. Bryce was deeply embedded and in love with her city, that something so small and unimportant in the grand scheme of things did not require her to go far. It would be far easier just to wait for Alfred’s cooking, which didn’t leave her much time on patrol.

Dixie nodded.  Right.  Batman.

“Sure.  I’ll smuggle some ramen over sometime and show you all the tricks of the trade!”  She glanced around, then hurried into a hug.  ”Miss you.  Glad to come home for a bit.”

She tilted her head towards the older girl. “Is everything alright, Dixie? That sounded kinda sad…”

She sat up, eyes a little wider than normal.  ”Did it?  Oh, heheh…”  Her laugh had a sharp edge to it, a bit hysterical.  ”It’s nothing, really.  It’s….”  She hung her head and sighed.

She’d been travelling the Multiverse so much, sweeping in and out between here and there, that she hadn’t really had time to just… talk.  To anyone.

“I’m a little lonely,” she blurted out, rocking slightly.  ”I haven’t— Roy and I— Wally and I— Barbara and I….”  She looked back at Tiff.  ”I guess I’m just not as happy as I thought I’d be, y’know?  Not quite as…grounded.”

“Aww, Dixie…” she wrapped her arms around the other girl. “I suppose with so many worlds, and so many versions of loved ones, it would be difficult to settle. Especially with your vast love of…everyone.”

She pulled her into a tighter hug.  It felt so good to have this much physical contact with someone.  She’d missed it.

“And it’s like… It’s so weird that I can be home for work, hop through a portal into some new Earths, meet all these cool people, and be back to mine before my frozen dinner’s done, y’know?  And yet… I can’t seem to find the time to spend with my people.  I’m never there, or they’re never there, or… something…..”  She nuzzled her shoulder.

“It kinda feels like falling.”

“Well, no, actually, I’ve only been home, and here, and I really like being here, I don’t think I’ll be leaving anytime soon, if I can help it. You ever get that feeling like things are the way they should be, even if the world outside is crazy, there’s that person or place, that just feels…right?”

She smiled.  ”Oh yeah.  I’ve had that a lot, actually.  It’s nice, isn’t it?  That feeling of being grounded.  Safe.  Someone to catch you.”

Tiff blushed slightly and nodded. “Yeah, it’s pretty great, and since he’s Superboy, he can pretty much catch me wherever…”

Dixie grinned and scooted up next to her.  ”Ah, it’s Bats and Supers in every universe, huh?  That’s cute!  Well, good for you!  I’m glad to hear things are going so well.”  She leaned her head on Tiff’s shoulder.

“I’m always glad people are doing well.”

“Hey, how’re you?”

“Oh, y’know,” Dixie said, absently flipping around, “beating up bad guys, not sleeping till five, winning love my daylight, fighting crime by moonlight.  You know, the usual.”

She winked and landed on her feet in front of Tiffany, smiling widely.  ”And how’re you?”

“What, so you’re Sailor Moon now, too?” Tiff asked as she watched the nimble acrobat bouncing around.

“I’m pretty good, my boyfriend is no longer 16, so that’s an improvement. Not that he wasn’t an interesting 16-year-old, but…he wasn’t who I was used to. Nani and I had a pillow fight the other night. The Titans are keeping close watch over our city…So, yeah, been keeping pretty busy.”

Dixie gasped, bouncing slightly on her toes.  ”You have a boyfriend?  Aw, young love~”  Something clicked.  ”Wait.  ’No longer’?  Did he… revert or something?”

“Yeah, just randomly turned up as a 16-year-old one day, he turned back, though, so it’s all good. It was an interesting character study, though, seeing what he was like at that age. It truly is fascinating how our different experiences and life choices help to shape us into who we are today. I got talking to Tim once about the ramifications of gender differences and how those…” She continues to babble on in rather technical terms about the conversations she’d once had with a Tim Drake she’d met.

Dixie listened intently, hanging on every word…for about five minutes.  When she realized Tiffany wasn’t going to be stopping any time soon (possibly not even for breath), her eyes glazed over.  It wasn’t that it wasn’t fascinating—the Multiverse itself was such an intricate thing that she really wanted to know more about—it’s just that, well…it seems every version of Timmy could ramble on and on.

And on.

“This is absolutely fascinating,” she said, taking full advantage of a momentary pause.  ”So, do you do a lot of Multiverse hopping, too?”

“Eh.”  Dixie waved her hand and shrugged.  ”No sense in a Multiverse being created if you can’t travel through it.  Might as well be a universe then, and that’s just boring.”  She grinned and absently went into relevée,  rising and descending slowly.

“Travel would be ideal,” she said, arms crossed. “However … ” Lady Bat frowned and put a hand on Dixie’s head, keeping her down while she spoke. The up and down was distracting. Why couldn’t the girl ever sit still? “However, the League and I are working on stabilizing the Gateways. Stabilize the Gateways, and we stabilize the Multiverse. With a stabilized Multiverse, we will be able to travel these pre-determined channels with no worry of causing an apocalypse.”

Dixie fell still and straightened slightly at her touch, ever the good soldier.  ”That sounds like a great plan.  Anything I can help with?  I could see about getting my League to start working on it.  Get them all talking or something.  Anything to help.”  She smiled, already primed to go into whatever action was needed.

” … Good,” Lady Bat said, simply. She nodded and took her hand off the younger female. “My League needs all the help they can get … “

Dixie nearly preened at the word, a very ingrained habit.  Instead, she nodded, eager to be of service.  ”Anything I can do, I’ll do it, I promise!”
